| Im really impressed by this guy, he is cheap, I can cycle him and I get prolly the extra card for sure, or I can just prevent a loss this turn, or get a win this turn. The only disadvantage is, that when ure enemy has one and upkeeps him, yours is useless, and most deks have him :O |

The Drifter normally depends on the deck for me.
If Jacks are on value, then yes.
Otherwise, even though he cycles for cheap he will continue to plague thin shootout hands.
He is mighty handy to keep from lossing the game though. but I'm not sure I would call him a staple.
new notion for a Fistful of Ghostrock thread..... _________________ Richard Carter

Yeah, it's a fantastic card. I try to include it in a lot of decks, even as filler. And I rarely mind having him sitting in Boot Hill as well. He is particularly good in spell heavy decks.
Some other staples;
Bob Bidwell exp
Mr. Bones
Reggie Cornell
Dustin Halloway
Cassidy Greene
Charlie Landers (any version)
Hank Gallagher
Montana Holland
Cain Regen
Abel Owens
Joseph Moon
These all make it into a lot of decks... and there's a few more that are really good very often too, like any stud with no upkeep (Billy No-neck) or any dude with influence and no upkeep (Maurice Foster).
PS - Move to General strategies? |

| btw I like more the outfit dudes, than to much drifters in deck. Cain and Abel are kinda boring cards, mostly the design of the drifters doesnt catch me. I dont like the background, and cept a few I dont like their paintings. O yes I love the drifter painting. Thats why I try to play with as little drifters as possible. |

| I think he is a waste in any deck quite honestly. The upkeep makes starting him turn one pointless and a waste. I think the only staples in the game are Will'O the Wisp, Claim Jumper, and Mr Bones. The game is too vast to have set staples. |

Not to dispute your intelligence, because I love anyone who plays this game, but I think the Drifter is the closest that a dude comes besides maybe CL, to being staple. I don't see why you'd ever start him, but using him as pure utility is the key. He can save / win you a game by providing extra influence and a mean gunner when you need one. I hardly ever pay his upkeep, hes just good for a spot shot. _________________ You can't stop whats comin'. |

If I played more decks than just my collegium, I would probably think of him as a staple. As my collegium deck currently sits, I use his little brother, the twitch.
I know, the twitch isn't nearly as cool.... unless it's the right deck. The twitch is in my value scheme, and has already proved to be an invaluable addition. He works the same for me as the drifter. I rarely pay his upkeep, but he's great when I can drop him. _________________ madscience

actually, I thought about this and came up with some valid reasons for starting the drifter (or his littlest brother, tom O'reilly). don't have time to post them right now, but I'll get back shortly. (anyone who wants to beat me to the punch feel free to jump in neanwhile ) |

I'm not a The Drifter fan. to me there is almost always too many great dude that are perfect, I end up cutting dudes that specifically fit my deck type.
Now that said, if he fits the deck type/style I would likely keep it over other characters, as long as he matches what I'm doing.
To me the staples were:
For shootout decks: Timmy Derek Ex
For Hex Decks: Crawford Talmage _________________ Cause I'm Austin Stoker, yes I'm the real Stoker. All you other Austin Stokers ain't nothin' but jokers. So will the real Austin Stoker please stand up, please stand up, please stand up... |

If there is space in the deck, I'd throw some copies in. But more often than not I'd rather draw a card that helps me, rather than putting off a loss for a turn.
I often find there isn't space in the deck.
It's slightly different if i'm running cards like Missed Me? Where I might find myself running 4 Drifters and throwing him into any shootouts I can. |
